Mixed fortunes on Anzac weekend

The girls had a full on weekend ahead, an away game against Dynamos on Sunday followed by a home game with Collie on the Monday.

Missing our wonderful coach left the team a little lost for Sunday’s game but after a rough start with Dynamos scoring the first goal River pulled together to play the game we know. Unfortunately the ladies were unable to score and we suffered our first loss.

Monday came to quick for some as we marched back onto the field keen to win. Even though we were missing a couple of players to injuries the girls were confident they could pull off a strong win for the fourth game of the season.

Captain Grace Allington lead the team in a solid warm up as Coach Jenni Boyle set the team up in their winning lineup.

Asha Dilkes Hoffman (a picture of poise and balance at left) was reliable as ever in the midfield making plenty of plays and having multiple shots on goals that put the Collie keeper in distress.

Paris Bedford and Grace Allington ran great along for the wings both having some great plays and shots. Our defenders including Ylly Lamperd, Audrey Tweddell and Emelia Hewton worked well with Ruby Tucker stopping any attacks that Collie put forward, allowing keeper Jasmine Meagher an easy first game of the season.

Ellie Williams (in control at right) was able to score her first and well deserved goal of the season; Jaye Lanzini followed her lead to score the second but not to be out done Ellie in her fine form scored her second goal for River to win 3-0
.
Coach Boyle full of praise was so proud of the way her team has rallied and learnt to play good soccer.

Player of the day went to Asha Dilkes Hoffman.

The next game for the ladies will be a rematch against Harvey at home on the 9thMay.

Family and spectators are more than welcome to encourage the ladies to another win.

The ladies travelled to Harvey for the first game of the season eager for a win.

women's teamThe team was greeted with warm weather and a slight breeze. Nervous laughter filled the change room as Coach Jenni Boyle instructed the team on a game plan that would lead us to our first win.

With Brooke Gaunt, our sweeper, leading the defence including new players Jodi Graeme, Jayde Jackson and returning player Emelia Hewton, Serena Leotta our keeper wasn’t going to see too much of the ball.

Ruby Tucker and Asha Dilkes Hoffman took up the roles of the centre midfield with Grace Allington and Pairs Bedford as our left and right wings. Ellie and Jaye Lanzini were our glory hound strikers for the day!

Great passing between our team made for a smooth game right from the first whistle. Harvey came out strong but was quickly stopped by our defence who made great passes to Asha and Ruby in the midfield.

Multiple attempts at goals by Ellie and Jaye were made but Harvey was the first to score. Not deterred Margaret River pulled together and Grace lead the charge on evening the score, a foul tackle on her resulted in Jaye scoring off the penalty.

The elation of evening the score gave the girls the energy they needed to dominate the rest of the game. Late in the second half Ruby sent a well placed cross to Paris who scored our second goal.

Chemmart player of the day went to Asha Dilkes Hoffman for her outstanding game as a centre midfielder.

The game was played in great spirits and was a fantastic start to our season. Our next game will be Sunday 18th April against Bunbury United at our home grounds.
