Margaret River Waves 4 v Capel 0

The long road trip from Margs. to Capel is always a testing one for parents and players of this age group, but having a full compliment of players to choose from, gave me and the whole squad a real lift.

The game begun a bit tentatively by both teams, until Sam Leigh unleashed a wonder goal from 25 metres  that found the top corner.

The Waves were now in control and a second goal was added after a great move between Jaz Kupfer-Hollis and Hudson Moore and finished by Sam.

Jye Halsall first game on a full size pitch was a memorable one,  winning him the Yallingup Maze award, he linked well with Jasper Harvey and Tanah Howden-Woodland on numerous occasions.

Goal scoring machine Luke Harney would not be denied a goal after another great passage of play, involving midfielders Aria Beddow and Wini Knapp giving the Waves a 3-0 lead.

Although goal keeper Ethan Hamilton was rarely bothered between the uprights, his ball distribution was excellent, feeding defenders Jasper Seisun, Alister White and Janaya Beddow, allowing them to play the ball out of back line with great skill.

The whole Waves team is starting to reap the benefits of “lifting their heads” before passing and its great to watch.

The Eagle Boys player of the match award go’s to Sam Leigh, not only for his second hat trick in as many weeks, but also for his marvelous contribution from central midfield in the last two games, congratulations.

I would like thank all the parents for their organization in getting the players to Capel and especially Mark Halsall for running the line and helping install the goal nets!

Thanks Gary Leigh –Coach-

Margaret River Waves 7 v GMAS 1

An exceptional start to the season from an inexperienced Waves team.
With only 3 players having played FIFA ruled games before, the transition was as smooth as a mill pond.
Although edging GMAS in possession the opening 15 minutes, the game remained scoreless, until a penalty was awarded, which Sam Leigh calmly placed in the bottom right corner.
This settled the Waves, who quickly built on this goal to take a 4-0 advantage into the break with further goals from Luke Harney, Hudson Moore and Sam, with the later two both going on to complete hat tricks.
The midfield trio of Jasper Harvey, Tanah Howdon- Woodland and Jaz Kupfer-Hollis all had wonderful games in all positions asked of them.
Central defenders Alistair White and Jasper Seisun, had a complete understanding from the first minute and looked like they had played together for years.
Ethan Hamilton and Aria Beddow defended well, linking defence and attack on many occasions.
Wini Knapp wins  the  Yallingup Maze award for her determined approach to the match and Janaya Beddow takes out the Eagle Boys Player of the match for a brilliant performance for such a young lady.
The best move of the game was left to  the  last goal for the Waves with several one two’s being played up the centre of the pitch before being slotted home by Hudson.
Well Played the Waves

Margaret River 5 v Collie 2

On a wet and wintry Sunday Margaret River hosted there old rivals Collie, just before kick off a heavy downpour made conditions underfoot very slippy, so both sides had trouble adjusting to the conditions. The first twenty minutes was a very even contest and the hard physical nature of Collie was unsettling the Margaret River players and they were second to the ball more often than not, the Collie players couldn’t keep up this intensity though and slowly the River players started to use the ball more effectively and began to start asking questions, a thunderbolt of a strike from Garry Holmes broke the deadlock than his arch duo Alex Costa added to the tally, this rattled Collie and they were finding it hard to get out of there half, a long ball out of defence caught the Collie defence napping and Alex got his second then a great team move was finished off by Trevor Armener to make it 4-0, at this point the Margaret River players were doing as they pleased and Collie were chasing shadows, a controversial free kick given to Collie on the edge of the penalty area, was superbly struck into the top corner to make the half time score 4-1.
The sun broke through for the second half and both sides stepped up a gear, although they were playing some very attractive soccer the Margaret River players were finding it hard to add to their tally, a free kick  from Collie caused confusion in the defence and Collie made it 4-2, this raised a few alarm bells but the game was put out of reach from Collie when Garry Holmes scored a net burster of a free kick, this took the sting out of the game and Margaret River cruised to victory, once again poor finishing was the only thing that was missing from a very solid victory, congratulations to Lewis Hayes who made his Senior debut for the club and the rest of the squad for another great team display.

Dunsborough Predators – 2 v FMR Dragons – 5

Awesome playing conditions in Dunsborough allowed for a great display of football and these teams fought out an epic battle.

The Dragons had the early field position and it was Brendan Clark who put pressure on the keeper from a throw in to put the visitors’ ahead early. The Dragons soon added another when Kai Grabner-Bond beautifully controlled a clearance ball from Margaret Rivers’ defence and a quick through ball saw Riley Demunari coolly slot the ball on his left foot past the keeper.

Dunsborough were far from out of the contest and their pressure finally told when Conor Wolfman pounced on a loose ball to finish a great strike passed the Dragons last line. He repeated the dose a short time later which had the game locked up at half time.

Margaret River needed to find their target when passing and most of their first half problems would disappear. To the players credit they were much more clinical in the second half and took control of the game from the opposition who were affording the Dragons a lot of space in midfield. Rory Stevenson after a fantastic second half was unable to return with a corked thigh so this saw Jack Kneebone play further up field and his attack on the ball and passing was a feature of the second half.

Josh Brown took advantage of the extra space in midfield to set up Ryner Koster for a regulation finish and Brendan Clark added another after a similar run to give the visitors some breathing space.

Our defence was holding firm with Tarn Staveley proving an impenetrable force at sweeper. Conor White and Hamish White were adding to the Predators frustration and when Riley, with one of his many crosses finally the regular goal scoring boot of Tyron Bradshaw the result was sealed.

Jed Mattinson was unlucky when a late strike found the woodwork and a fall in the penalty area was ruled to be “play on”.

A great team effort and a worthy opponent saw all players leave the pitch with their heads high. Another impressive effort from the Dragons, which is comforting, as we meet some more tough opposition in the coming weeks we will need to be bringing out our best games.

Happy Mothers’ Day ladies.

Margaret River Strikers 4 v Dunsborough 2

On a beautiful Autumns day the Strikers played host to a Dunsborough team that had a very impressive victory the previous week, so the whole squad knew they were in for a fierce contest. The following seventy minutes showed what depth of talent we have here in the South West, as both sides showed fantastic skill and team play. It really was end to end stuff and was great entertainment for the supporters from both teams. It was going to take something special to break the deadlock and that is what happened, as Jayden Stammers made a penetrating run from the defence and laid a  great pass to Kelby Guthrie Phelps who beat his opponent and squared it inside to Sol Masters, who curled it into the corner of the net. This was followed up very quickly by another great piece of individual play from Jayden Stammers who curled a shot in from a corner.
Two nil up and dominating play, it looked like this was going to be another solid victory to the Strikers, but the Dunsborough team lifted their intensity to another level, and pulled one back through their main striker James Black. Dunsborough were flying, and putting the Strikers defence under great pressure, but great goalkeeping from Jesse Gunnis and solid defensive play from Jake Sales, Jesse Martin and Daniel Murtagh kept them out.
The midfield of Kade Bougoure, Adrian Woodward and Zac Harney were working overtime, and out of the blue another great strike form Jake Graebner Bond found the net to make it 3-1, back came the Dunsborough team and scored a second from another goal by James Black. The whistle blew for half time and everyone had a chance to draw breath such was the pace of the game.
The second half didn’t let us down as it was like a heavy weight boxing fight as both teams attacked , Jake Cockin in his first game for the season, was putting the Dunsborough defence under pressure and then a well worked move saw the Dunsborough defender stop the ball on the goal line with his hands with the goal keeper well beaten, this saw the player sent off and the resultant penalty well taken by Jayden Stammers, increasing the gap by two goals which the Strikers held to the final whistle. Congratulations to both teams on a great game. Eagle Boys Player of the match was Jayden Stammers and the Yallingup Maze award went to Jake Sales.

FMR Marlins v Vasse Falcons

The Marlins first game of the season was anticipated by players and parents alike!!!
The Vasse Falcons provided a stern test and the Marlins started brightly and even though there were a few first time players they soon settled helped by an early goal from Sol, a superb long range effort. Alex, Angus and Tomo provided solid defence. James went in goal for the first half and he made one unbelievably brave save which unfortunately resulted in injury which meant Alex had to take the gloves. Sol was everywhere and combined well with Annika and Jace in midfield to keep the ball for Marlins and feed Jim and Molly in attack as the Marlins put the Falcons under pressure.
The Marlins were unlucky not to get more goals and in the second half they conceded several as the Falcons hit some fantastic shots on target. But the Marlins regained their composure and attacked with Jim causing the Falcons defence all sorts of problems with his direct running. He was unlucky not to score after hitting the goalie and defenders time after time. For his efforts all through the game and considering this was his first game of soccer the player of the day was Jim.
Special thanks to Simon for reffing the first half. The coach and parents were rightly proud of such a great all-round performance and I look forward to a great season ahead, well done to the Marlins!

Football Margaret River 0 v Blackwood 1

With the bare minimum of 11 players the team took the trek to Balingup  with confidence that we could be in with a win. The first half of the game was arguably FMR’s worst 45 mins of football that I have witnessed with missed kicks, airies and no structure or shape. Luckily Blackwood were as bad. After half time it was like a new team had taken the field. Marnie Robbins in goal kept us in the game with a stunning save low down to her right that was going in on the post ( sorry IGA for getting her back late), Jasmina Andros, 14yo, the juve of the team, was out performing everyone on the pitch with 80m sprints in attack and defence. Kate Salvatore was supplying quality ball to the forwards who now had Blackwood defending their own goal. Things began to get willing and the yellow card came out  to try to tame the girls down but it only escalated, with strong physical performance put in by Sharni Giles, Jaelle Hofman and Evie Koster. Grace Allington had several close calls only to be denied by the keeper. With the clock ticking down Robbins pulled off another gutsy save from the feet of her opponent only to see the ref points to the spot and Blackwood slot a penalty with  only minutes to go. Bad luck girls but if you played the first half like you played the 2nd half you would have won. You always know it is going to be an interesting day out when you come across your two strikers chasing 3 pigs down a country road on route to the game….. priceless ladies. Next week we play Collie at home. Mature aged players still required. info@footballmargaretriver.org

Margaret River Glory 4 def. Cornerstone Crusaders 0

A sunny day and promising ground conditions awaited Margaret River Glory for their first U13 match of the 2012 season. Undeterred by a late start, Glory settled into the game early in the first half and played a strong attacking game. The Crusaders’ defence was challenged but they were successful in fending of Glory until the pressure became too much and a handball error forced them into a penalty situation. Glory relished the opportunity and Lucas Marrill secured goal number one. In reply, the Crusaders lifted their game and went into attack but strong defence from India Stanley and Sam Lane in conjunction with some quick, long kick outs from Lani Payne in goal, kept Cornerstone at bay. In the second half, Glory continued their attack on the Crusaders’ goal supported by relentless pressure from Callum Stevenson and Brenton Tebbutt with a scoring shot presenting itself to Lucas Marrill again, which found the back of the net. Wasting no time Luke Harney spotted another scoring opportunity and the third goal was secured. Taylor Kevill and Shealy Carboni both put in strong performances in their soccer debut , transitioning from Netball with ease. The Crusaders gallant performance unfortunately left them scoreless. Glory’s teamwork was rewarded and were pumped by their victory.

Margaret River Strikers 6 v GMAS 0

There was a buzz in the air on the first day of the 2012 Soccer season, as months of training was now going to be put to the test in the first game, fielding mostly 16 year olds and facing a lot bigger opposition, the Strikers may have felt a bit daunted by what was in front of them, but they needn’t have worried, as the crisp passing and movement of this Margaret River team had the GMAS chasing shadows, and proved why they were winners and went unbeaten in the League last year.
It wasn’t long before the Strikers took the lead through a well taken goal by Kelby Guthrie Phelps and you thought that this was going to be a big score line but the solid goal keeping of the GMAS Goal Keeper and poor finishing in front of goal kept the score line the same till half time.
The half time team talk was of moving the ball faster in the attacking area and communicating more as a team, this had the desired effect as they laid siege on the GMAS goal and wave after wave of attack kept going and finally Kelby added to his total, this broke the back of the GMAS team and a well worked move was cooly finished by Sol Masters, who went on a goal scoring blitz and added two more for his hat trick and Zac Harney added a sixth for good measure.
This was a great result by the Strikers and they were well worth the win, special mentions to Daniel Murtagh on a great debut game for the Margaret River club and Jake Sales the captain, who led by example and congratulations to all the squad for great team play.
Eagle Boys Player of the day was Sol Masters and the Yallingup Maze award went to Daniel Murtagh.
